It's Time!

The first three days of 2nd grade were a hit!  We've gotten to know each other a bit, so today it was time to get to business!  We reviewed (from 1st grade) how to tell time to the hour.

We practiced on the white board using our amazing new LCD projector.

Then we worked with elapsed time using our own individual clocks.

But our favorite part was the human clock! Pairs of students decided who would be the hour hand and who would be the minute hand.  Then, they picked a time to represent and the rest of the class read the clock.

Getting to Know You Activity

I saw this great activity on Pinterest and had to try it!

I posted these topics on the board.

I cut ovals from the center of a 9x12 sheet of construction paper.  Around the face hole, the students wrote, drew and colored the information from the board.  Then they shared with their classmates!

It was a different, fun way to get to know my new 2nd grade friends!

Classroom Preview Day

All of my preparation paid off today.  I got to meet 22 of my 23 students.  My room was in tip top shape.  It was so refreshing to come home and know that I got it ALL done!  And because we all like to see each other's rooms, here's some pics of mine!

The Cowboy Cookies were a hit!

My awesome team leader's husband made these giant posters for us to feature our 2nd grade QR code.  Parents can access our weekly spelling words, Bible verse, and announcements on their cell phones with this code.

We're so excited to have our LCD projectors this year!

And now it's time to prepare for the big day on Wednesday!

Book Trailers

Do you know about book trailers?
If you google "book trailers, (name of book)"  you can find teasers to books you may be reading in your classroom .  Of course, as with anything on google, you have to be careful and find just the right trailer.  But when you find the right one, it's worth it!

Here's the book trailer for a novel we read in 2nd grade, The Boxcar Children #1.



Here's one for Chrysanthemum which we're reading on the first day of school.



I think this a genius way to capture our students' attention for the sake of reading!

To take this a step further, wouldn't it be great to let the students create their own book trailers for their favorite books??

These Boots Are Made For Workin'

This is my job display.  I made these cool boots using my fantabulous Cricut.  

I wrote the job on each boot.  (I have one job for each student.)  

On the spur I wrote a number for each student.  I hot glued the spur to a clothespin that can easily attach and be rotated each week when I change jobs.

Since the clothespins can make each boot a little heavy, I put this display on my cabinet using velcro.

The velcro comes off without incident at the end of the year with a little Goo Be Gone!

Classroom Preview Day (a.k.a. Meet the Teacher Day)

I found this adorable poem floating around (the author was unknown). I adapted it to fit my Western theme. The poem is stapled to a bag (I happened to have red and blue ones). It will be sitting on their desk to welcome them on Classroom Preview Day.

Inside the bag will be "cowboy cookies". Otherwise known as Cookie Crisp cereal!

Meet Mrs. Hughes

I'm so excited for school to start!. I have less than 48 hours until I go back to school officially for the new school year.   Tonight I just couldn't contain my excitement, so I made my "Meet Mrs. Hughes" page for my classroom blog.   Here's what it looks like:

Hi, Super Second Graders! I'm Mrs. Hughes. I'm so thrilled that you're in my class.  

Here are some things that you should know about your teacher:

I asked Jesus to be my Savior when I was 10 years old.  I love Jesus so much.  He is always with me.  Jesus is the only One who can make me a good wife, mom, friend and teacher.
My favorite Bible verse is II Corinthians 5:17.

This is my 13th year of teaching.  Being a teacher is so fun.  It is one of my favorite things to do.  

Let me introduce you to my family.

This is Mr. Hughes.  We have been married for 17 years.

This is my cool son, Dylan.  He loves to fish with his Dad.

This my sweet daughter, Holly.  She is in 2nd grade this year like you!

This is my puppy, Bullet.  He is a dachshund or "hot dog".

I love doing anything fun with my family.  They are my favorite people to be with.

We love to camp together.

My son and husband love baseball.  Dylan plays baseball, so I am a baseball mom.

One of my favorite things to do is to cook and make fun cupcakes and desserts.

I also like to scrapbook.  Over vacation I made 20 scrapbook pages all in one night!

 I am so happy that you are in my class.  I can't wait to learn about you and all of your favorite things!

Howdy!

I'm so excited about my western theme this year.  Here's some pics of what's up so far...

Why buy these clock labels when you can make it in about 15 minutes for the cost of a sheet or 2 of paper?

I love the little cows.  They'll have the kids' names on them. The title above the cows says "Mrs. Hughes's Herd".

I'll put each students name and birthdate on the hat that has the month of their birthday.

This is my behavior board.  The title is "Are You Horsing Around?" Notice each horse has a green bandana on.  I also have horses with blue, yellow, and red bandanas that the students will switch out as they receive a consequence.
